Ajman Municipality Signs Four Memoranda of Understanding to Support Carbon Neutrality Project Towards 2050

The Ajman Municipality & Planning Department signed four memoranda of understanding with a number of local entities in the Emirate as part of the Ajman Carbon Neutrality Project, to unify institutional efforts and strengthen integration in the implementation of initiatives and projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions and achieving the Emirate’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

The signing of the agreements took place during the Ajman Carbon Neutrality Project Partners Forum, held in the presence of representatives of the partner entities — a step that reflects the shared commitment to applying best environmental practices, exchanging data and expertise, and preparing sectoral implementation plans that support the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

His Excellency Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Ajman Municipality & Planning Department, affirmed that the signing of the agreements represents a strategic milestone in the Emirate’s journey towards a more sustainable future, and embodies the collaborative approach adopted by government entities to achieve carbon neutrality targets.

He stated: “Achieving carbon neutrality is a shared responsibility that requires the integration of roles and the unification of efforts across all sectors. The Department has been committed to building effective partnerships that contribute to the preparation and implementation of a clear roadmap based on accurate data and actionable implementation plans — enhancing Ajman’s standing among leading cities in sustainability and quality of life. These agreements mark the beginning of a new phase of joint action, in which we transition from planning to actual implementation, in partnership with the various government entities.”

He added that this direction reflects a firm conviction that environmental protection is not an option, but a strategic necessity — and that every step taken to reduce carbon emissions represents a direct investment in human health, the integrity of ecosystems, and the continuity of development for future generations.

The agreements were signed with the Ajman Department of Tourism, Culture and Media; Ajman Chamber; the Ajman Department of Economic Development; and the Private Education Affairs Office.

The agreements aim to develop emissions baselines in the targeted sectors, exchange data on energy and fuel consumption, prepare implementation plans for reducing carbon emissions, implement sustainable initiatives and projects, submit periodic reports, and incorporate carbon neutrality targets within the operational and strategic plans of the participating entities — contributing to the realisation of the Emirate’s vision towards a low-carbon economy.

For their part, representatives of the partner entities affirmed that the transition towards a low-carbon economy requires the concerted efforts of all sectors — reinforcing the principle of shared environmental responsibility and protecting the ecosystem of the Emirate of Ajman in a manner that serves the health of residents, air quality, and quality of life.

His Excellency Salem Al Suwaidi, Director General of Ajman Chamber, stated: “The Chamber affirms its pivotal role in supporting the Emirate’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality targets in alignment with the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative — by enabling its industrial members to adopt sustainable and innovative production practices and disseminate best environmental practices, thereby supporting the competitiveness and sustainability of the industrial sector.”

He affirmed that the Chamber believes sustainability in the industrial sector has become a key factor in enhancing the competitiveness of the local economy and its investment attractiveness, and that investment in energy efficiency initiatives and low-carbon solutions is an investment in the future of industry and one of the tools supporting the journey of economic development and resource preservation.

For her part, His Excellency Aisha Sultan Al Shamsi, Executive Director of the Ajman Private Education Affairs Office, affirmed that the memorandum of understanding reflects a strategic step towards supporting the targets of the Ajman Carbon Neutrality Project and consolidating the role of the education sector as a key partner in achieving the Emirate’s vision towards a more sustainable future.

She added: “The Office will work, in cooperation with the Ajman Municipality & Planning Department, to develop and implement sustainable initiatives in private schools and educational institutions, and to integrate sustainability principles within the educational environment — enhancing environmental awareness among students, teaching and administrative staff, and contributing to the preparation of generations capable of supporting the transition towards a green economy.”

She noted that this partnership embodies the institutional integration approach in achieving sustainability targets, and affirms that the education sector represents one of the primary drivers in building a low-carbon future — supporting the vision of the Emirate of Ajman and enhancing quality of life for current and future generations.

Mohammed Masoud Al Ketbi, Director of the Government Communication Office at the Ajman Department of Economic Development, stated that the agreement will contribute to enhancing the sustainability of the economic sector and supporting initiatives and projects that improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the industrial sector.

For his part, Abdulaziz Hamad Al Muhairi, Acting Director General of the Ajman Department of Tourism, Culture and Media and Director of the Legal Affairs Office, affirmed that the signing of the agreement reflects the Department’s commitment to strengthening institutional cooperation frameworks with various partners in support of the Ajman Carbon Neutrality Project and consolidating sustainable practices in the tourism sector.

He noted that the agreement represents a legal and regulatory framework that entrenches joint action for the development of environmental initiatives and the preparation of plans that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and raising the efficiency of hotel and tourism establishments in line with the Emirate’s sustainable development objectives.

These collective initiatives affirm that combating climate change begins with tangible local steps that accumulate to shape the contours of a more balanced and sustainable environmental future, and to preserve Ajman’s natural resources for generations to come.

Ajman Carbon Neutrality Project Partners Council

At the conclusion of the agreement-signing ceremony, the Ajman Municipality & Planning Department convened the Ajman Carbon Neutrality Project Partners Council, as part of a series of partners’ council meetings to be organised periodically by the Department, with the aim of discussing the mechanisms for implementing the project, reviewing roles and responsibilities, strengthening integration among partner entities, and monitoring the implementation of sectoral initiatives and plans, thereby ensuring the achievement of the Emirate’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Council discussed the priorities of the next phase, mechanisms for data exchange, the preparation of executive action plans, and performance indicators, contributing to accelerating the pace of implementation and translating the project’s objectives into practical, actionable programmes and initiatives.

At the conclusion of the forum, participants affirmed that the signing of the memoranda of understanding and the convening of the Partners Council mark the official launch of the implementation phase and lay the foundations for an integrated government framework built on partnership and unified efforts, further strengthening the Emirate of Ajman’s position as a leading model in climate action and sustainability while supporting the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2050.
